Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum wage in Kenya in 2026?
The Regulation of Wages (General) (Amendment) Order, 2026 raised general minimum wages by 12%, deemed to be in force from 1 May 2026. The wage depends on the occupation and on where the employee works. For a general labourer it is KES 18,047.40 a month in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru and Eldoret.
Does the minimum wage include housing allowance?
No. The monthly figures are basic pay and are paid exclusive of housing allowance. Check how your contracts treat housing before comparing pay with the schedule.
Which occupations does this calculator cover?
Six common groups: general labourer, night watchman, receptionist and storekeeper, tailor and medium-vehicle driver, cashier and heavy-vehicle driver, and artisan grade I. The Order lists more occupations, including machine operators, clerks and shop assistants, so for those check the Order or ask us.
What about backdated pay?
The Order is deemed to have come into operation on 1 May 2026. If an employee was paid below the new minimum from that date, the difference may be owed for each month. Read our guide on backdated minimum wage for how to handle it and the deductions.
Are agricultural wages covered?
No. Agricultural minimum wages are set by a separate order. This calculator covers the general order only.
