Frequently asked questions
How is overtime paid in Kenya?
Under the Regulation of Wages (General) Order, overtime on a normal working day is paid at 1.5 times the normal hourly rate, and work on a rest day or public holiday is paid at 2 times. Some contracts and collective agreements pay more.
How do I work out the normal hourly rate?
Divide the monthly basic salary by the number of hours in a month that your employment terms use. The calculator starts at 225 hours, which is a common figure. Change it to match your contract.
Is overtime taxed?
Yes. Overtime is part of gross pay, so PAYE, NSSF, SHIF and the Housing Levy apply to it. Add the overtime total as other earnings in the Kenya payroll calculator to see the effect on take-home pay.
Do all employees get overtime?
Not always. Some roles, such as senior or managerial positions, may be paid a salary that already covers extra hours, and rules differ by sector. Check the contract and the wage order that applies to the sector.
Is this legal advice?
No. It is a general guide using the figures you enter. Check your contract, any collective agreement and the wage order for your sector.
